Legionella spp.

Duplicα RealTime Legionella spp. Detection Kit is an in vitro diagnostic test for the detection of Legionella spp. DNA, by Real-Time PCR.

Overview

Legionnaires’ disease or legionellosis refers to a serious form of pneumoniae caused by Legionella species. The family Legionellaceae consists of the single genus Legionella. Legionella spp. are Gram-negative rods ubiquitous in the environment, and can enter man-made hot water systems in defined areas (hotels, hospitals, whirlpool spas, etc.) and air-conditioning cooling towers. Their proliferation is supported by co-existing microorganisms, free-living amoebae, and biofilm. There are currently more than 50 known species and Legionella pneumophila the first described species contains 16 serogroups, but Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 accounts for the majority of American and European clinical isolates. Transmission of Legionella occurs via inhalation of aqueous aerosols dispersed by environmental infected sources. A few cases may also be the result of micro-aspiration of organisms from the oropharynx. Legionellosis generally carries a high mortality rate (15– 25%). Most cases of legionellosis are sporadic but outbreaks can also be observed. Legionellosis can be difficult to diagnose because the signs and symptoms are non-specific. Nevertheless a definite diagnosis is important because it enables early adequate antimicrobial treatment.
